For the sake of your comfort and convenience, you can opt to come in your own car. If not then you choose to come by public transport like train, bus or air.
If you are travelling by air, the closest airport to Mcleodganj is Gaggal Airport which is located 10 km away from Dharamshala. Other private operators also provide nighttime buses between Delhi and Dharamshala. However, the ideal way to reach Mcleodganj from Delhi is by taking a Volvo of either HRTC or HPTDC. Other private operators also provide nighttime buses between Delhi and Dharamshala. The third and cheapest method, but the most time-consuming, is to go by rail to Mcleodganj or Triund. A train to Pathankot takes around 6-7 hours.
